Note:

Census record for National Disabled Volunteer Soldiers home (1900, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin) shows Frederick as divorced. However, multiple affidavits by many acquaintances and family members, including Gertrude Wolbert Mueller, state that Frederick and Gertrude were never divorced. It is presumed that this notation on the census either reflects a guess by whoever completed the census questions at the home (it is not likely that Gertrude ever visited her husband in the home) or that it was his declaration at the time of admittance in order to qualify for residence (i.e., he had no other means of support). The Veterans homes were established for vets who had no means of support (and, ideally, had no one depending on them).Frederick suffered from a complete right inguinal hernia which he claimed was the result of "excessive marching" and numerous "falls" during his term of service in the Civil War. His injury allegedly occurred before he ever saw any battle action and he was removed to the hospital at Yorktown (the first of three hospital stays before being honorably discharged). His pension was constantly in dispute for a period of over 20 years, necessitating his voluntary entry in first the vets home in Wisconsin and second in the vets home in New York (where he experienced two separate residence events). Because Frederick could never get validation that the injury was experienced in the war (as opposed to being a pre-existing condition), his claim remained in dispute until his death (his commanding officer was subsequently killed at Malvern Hill and he had few comrades who were aware of his injury, none being available during the disputation). In later years Frederick suffered from heart failure (which may have been an offshoot of the hernia, according to some physicians), a fractured foot from being run over by a horse car in 1888, and hip problems from a fall on the ice in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1897. His initial claim included catarrh of the throat and, over time, rheumatism. Eventually the catarrh issue was dropped from the correspondence and consideration.Above information was extracted from census records and Frederick's pension records.Census record for National Disabled Volunteer Soldiers home (1900, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin) shows Frederick as divorced.
